Allendale in Northumbria was an area famed for its quilting . When the lead industry failed in this region many people emigrated or moved away , but those who remained had to look to other sources of income . One such was George Gardiner , shop owner , who became famous for his quilt designs, he had many apprentices know as quilt stampers . It was considered prestigious to pay to have your quilt marked by one of these professional 'stampers'
